New success of Orriols Opens its Doors
After the agreement with our partners about the testing activities, from Valencia Acull we carry out the activity of Orriols Abre sus Puertas on June 10, 2023 within the Erasmus Plus Project Speak Out: Building a social and Inclusive Europe through Youth and Migrant Volunteering. This activity seeks to bring people together, generate debates and dialogues between people of different profiles and cultures, as well as to promote and make visible the interculturality of our neighborhood of Orriols. It is a close and participatory experience that brings people together through gastronomy.
The activity was carried out in different parts. To begin with, we identified host homes willing to participate and cook food from their country of origin to share with people visiting the homes. From this point we created a map and designed a series of routes for the visits. Then we spread the activity through social networks, in universities and in small stores and associations in the neighborhood itself. We divided the people attending into different groups and a leader was assigned to each one who knew the neighborhood to guide and follow the corresponding route. There in the houses people introduced themselves and exchanged their different experiences, stories and experiences... and most important of all, food was shared and enjoyed!
The activity was a success! Eight houses from a multitude of countries participated. Specifically from Mexico, Colombia, Algeria, Equatorial Guinea, Pakistan, Dominican Republic, Brazil and India. Twenty-four young people also attended from a variety of countries, including Spain, Peru, Bolivia, Germany, Ecuador, Morocco, Romania, Costa Rica, Honduras and Colombia. Sixteen of the participants were women and eight were men - it was a great day! Everyone felt welcomed, exchanged experiences, new perspectives and recipes and, most important of all, created bonds, networks and a greater sense of community and relevance. We would like to thank all the people who offered their homes: Nina, Palwinder, Zoraida, Fatima, Nelida, Fouzia, Nancy and Greta. It would not have been possible without the willingness and effort of all of you!
